The #7 UVA women's soccer team beat James Madison University 4-1 Sunday afternoon at Klockner Stadium in the final match of the Nike Classic.
The Cavaliers (7-1-0) won their seventh straight match in their final non-conference match of the season. That's the longest winning streak for Virginia since 2004.
"Great weekend," said UVA assistant coach Ron Raab. "To come away with two wins at home to wrap up our non-conference schedule, I think is huge. Today, James Madison gave us a battle. We expected that. Certainly the second half got a little interesting when they tied things up, but I think, credit to our kids, we responded quite well and raised their level, and obviously finished a couple of good chances here in the second half and came away with the win."
The Dukes drop to 2-4-0 this season.
The Wahoos improve to 21-1-2 all-time against Madison, 14-0-1 in Charlottesville, with their ninth straight win over the Dukes.
Danielle Colaprico scored the only goal of the first half in the 18th minute to put Virginia up 1-0 at halftime. The sophomore blasted her third goal of the season into the corner of the net on an assist from senior Julia Roberts.
JMU tied the match 1-1 just over five minutes into the second half when senior Katie Menzie scored on an assist from redshirt freshman Madyson Brown.
Just over 15:00 later, the referee awarded UVA with a penalty kick. Freshman Makenzy Doniak scored her team-high seventh goal of the season to give the 'Hoos a lead they would not give up.
In the 79th minute, Colaprico slipped a beautiful pass to Gloria Douglas, who scored on a precise touch to make it 3-1 Cavaliers. Douglas finished her second goal of the season. Roberts also earned an assist on the play.
"Anyone who has pressure on them, they're going to get a little flustered," said Douglas. "I was just trying to bring a lot of pressure to the team, and then the third goal helped. I think it brought them down a little bit, and then we just kept going at 'em, kept going for the last minutes."
Less than 4:00 later, fellow junior Kate Norbo scored her second goal of the season, heading a ball past the diving keeper off a corner kick. Junior Amber Fry got an assist on the play.
The 'Hoos outshot the Dukes 18-10.
Virginia is now 30-0-1 in its last 31 games against CAA opponents dating back to 1999, including 16 straight wins.
"I thought it was a great result," said Colaprico. "We're really bringing it together after the first game. We have great chemistry, and I think it's going to help us in the long run."
UVA begins ACC play at home Thursday night. The Cavaliers host North Carolina State at 7:00. FOX Soccer Channel will broadcast the match live from Klockner Stadium.
UVA head coach Steve Swanson and sophomore Morgan Brian, who both missed the first month of the season, will be back with the 'Hoos. They helped the United States Under-20 national team win the FIFA World Cup in Japan. The U.S. beat Germany 1-0 to claim the title Saturday. Brian started all six games for the United States in the tournament and scored the game-winning goal in a 2-0 semifinal win over Nigeria.
