Fall Practice Begins Saturday for UVA Baseball Team
The UVA baseball team begins fall practice Saturday.
The Cavaliers will practice at The Park for the next couple weeks, because a complete renovation continues at Davenport Field.
A brand new irrigation and field draining system is being installed as well as a sand-based grass playing surface.
There will also be a new synthetic warning track and new field turf collar behind home plate.
"I'm really excited about the new playing surface," said UVA head coach Brian O'Connor. "They started construction on it right after the season, right after the NCAA Regional. I've been able to witness it from my office all summer long, and it was a major project. We're really about ten days to two weeks away from getting on that field, so we're really planning on getting out there by September 19th."
Former Wahoo stars Mark Reynolds and Ryan Zimmerman have been playing key rolls in their team's pennant races in the Big Leagues this season.
Reynolds hit two more home runs Thursday night to help the Orioles beat the Yankees and move into first place tie in the American League East.
Zimmerman had two hits and three RBI in the Nationals' 9-2 win over the Cubs Thursday night.
"What an exciting time for both of those organizations to be right there in the mix," said O'Connor. "Both of them, Ryan and Mark, are performing at such a high level. It makes you proud. You're happy for them. Really, you're happy for them to get a chance to have success as a team."
