CULPEPER, Va. (AP) - A 2-year renovation project at Historic Culpeper National Cemetery is expected to be completed in October.

Work is under way on the final phase of the $1.9 million "Millennium Project." Sod around the gravesites will be reseeded and replaced.

The project also included cleaning and realigning more than 7,000 sunken grave markers. Contractor Allserv Inc. of Chapin, S.C., installed a concrete grid support system below each marker.

Allserv President Jeff Calvin tells the Culpeper Star-Exponent that the renovation will allow the headstones to stay aligned for at least 20 years.

Calvin says workers recently found two headstones of unidentified Civil War soldiers that had sunk below the surface.

The cemetery was established in 1867.
