Thistle Gate Vineyard Grand Opening in Albemarle County
You now have a new place to raise your glass in southern Albemarle County. Thistle Gate Vineyard is celebrating its grand opening this week, but the owners never intended to open a winery.
When the Cushnies moved to Scottsville and bought the property for their retirement, they knew they wanted to keep the land for agriculture.
"It's great for the community. It gives us always something to do. We're never bored and it really brings our family closer together," said Christy Cushnie, the owners' daughter.
The family decided to grow grapes to sell. "It ended up being so much effort that went into growing grapes that we couldn't let them go. We had to go into the winemaking business as well," said George Cushnie, who owns Thistle Gate Vineyard with his wife.
The Cushnies say opening a tasting room was the next logical step. "Thistle Gate Vineyard is really small-knit, it's a small community, family-oriented," said Christy.
Thistle Gate has now decided to team up with James River Brewing, which also just opened, to market the beer and wine in the region.
"I hope it brings more people to Scottsville and more jobs too and at the end of the day that people just enjoy themselves," Christy said.
The winery officially opens at 1:00 Friday afternoon.
