The #8 Virginia field hockey team upset #3 Old Dominion 5-4 Sunday at University Hall Turf Field.
Senior Paige Selenski and junior Elly Buckley both scored twice for the 'Hoos, while junior Carissa Vittese added another goal.
The game was tied at 1-1 early in the first half, when the match was delayed for over 90 minutes due to rain and lightning.
The Cavaliers came out strong after the delay, and led 4-2 at halftime.
After a Buckley goal gave UVA a 5-2 advantage, ODU would score two late goals, but the Cavaliers were able to hang on for the win.
"We knew it was going to be like this, so we just had to play our system," says Buckley. "That's what we focus on, we don't really focus on the other team. We just focus on what we want to do."
Head coach Michele Madison says the team let up a little bit defensively in the second half, but she still likes the high-flying attack.
"We'll take it," says Madison. "We'd rather win 5-4, then lose 1-0. That's what we want to do, score goals."
UVA returns to action Friday at Michigan State.
Rachel Palumbo scored in overtime to give JMU a 2-1 upset against #25 American Sunday in Harrisonburg.
Rachel Wein also scored for the Dukes, who will be back at home against Davidson next Sunday.
