Police have captured two escaped inmates that had dozens of police, deputies and corrections officers on the hunt near Staunton Wednesday.
The two inmates from the Cold Spring's Correctional Unit in Greenville were last seen on work detail at the regional landfill in Jollivue around 10:15 a.m.
They are identified as 28-year-old Joshua Ryan Ansell and 36-year-old Shawn Milton Barb. Ansell is serving a 9-year sentence for DUI manslaughter in Virginia Beach. Barb is imprisoned for credit card theft and probation violations in Page County.
Police chased numerous sightings over the past several hours, from the Blackburn Addition neighborhood to the Staunton Mall. A former corrections officer who now works at a Staunton car dealership spotted the escapees a half-hour later, but did not give chase.
Chad Wilson of Valley Honda said, "The last thing I wanted to do was be in the woods when they're looking for them. But I did give them a good detailed description of direction or travel, and aided slightly by going down to try to head off an area, and maybe give a description or observe maybe where they're heading."
Tracking dogs and a Virginia State Police helicopter aided in the search.
Ansell and Barb were captured shortly after 5 p.m., near Fisher Auto Parts off Gay Street in the city of Staunton.
