The #8 UVA women's soccer team beat UNC Wilmington 2-0 Sunday at Klöckner Stadium.
The win is the third shutout and victory in a row for Virginia (3-1).
Freshman Makenzy Doniak and sophomore Danielle Colaprico scored second-half goals for the Cavaliers.
Virginia outshot UNCW 29-3 in the contest.
Junior Gloria Douglas says, "I really like how we came out strong, and we wanted to make a statement from the very start. We know they're a physical team and well respected, especially from their previous games, so we just wanted to make a statement and go out there hard."
Assistant coach Rob Raab adds, "As long as we continue to work hard in training, and continue to improve on both sides of the ball, I'm pleased. At this stage, to be 3-1 and have three-straight shutouts at home in the last three games, I think that's great. It's a good stepping stone for us."
Doniak has scored five goals this year and is the first player in school history to start the season with a goal in each of the first four matches.
"It means a lot. It's really exciting," says the freshman. "I want to make an impact on this team, and so far I think I have with scoring, and just adding a spark to my team. I couldn't have done it without my teammates."
Raab says, "We had anticipation of good things from her, and they fact that she's been able to come in right away, at this stage of the season, and have the impact that she's had for us is fantastic. We're excited about her, and we think there's even more good things to come from her."
The Cavaliers will play their first road game of the season Friday in a tournament at the University of Texas.
The James Madison University women's soccer team shutout Temple 2-0 Sunday in Harrisonburg.
Kelly Kerrigan and Eileen Sechler scored for the Dukes (2-1).
The JMU men lost to Southern Illinois Edwardsville 1-0 at the Hokie Invitational in Blacksburg to fall to 0-2 this season.
The #8 UVA field hockey team lost at 3-2 at #9 Penn State.
Paige Selenski and Carissa Vittese scored for the 'Hoos (1-1).
The JMU field hockey team lost at Kent State 1-0, dropping to 1-1 this year.
