One-sided Debate for 5th District Congressional Seat in Fluvanna

Posted: Updated:

Democratic 5th District Congressional candidate John Douglass commanded the stage Wednesday night at a debate in Fluvanna County.  That's because he was the only candidate there.

Incumbent Republican Robert Hurt did not accept the invitation to attend the debate at the new Fluvanna County High School.

A campaign spokesperson blames communication problems.  They tell NBC29 they only learned about it after a Daily Progress reporter told them.

"We've asked them repeatedly to join us in debates," Douglass said.  "We've offered up five.  This is the second one they no-showed at, so I don't know whether they're just disorganized or afraid to be up on the stage with me, but the end result is they're not here."

Wednesday night, Douglass reiterated his opposition to extending tax cuts for the wealthy and uranium mining.  About 60 people were in attendance.  The Fluvanna County Chamber of Commerce hosted the debate.
