The new Wilson Elementary School is open to students even though not quite everything is ready.
The school in Fishersville is in the middle of a $15 million expansion and renovation. On Monday teachers and students had their first classes in the new addition. But the cafeteria and administrative offices are not finished, and must share space with the gym and library.
Augusta County says a shortage of subcontractors is part of the reason.
Augusta Superintendent Chuck Bishop said, "The cafeteria and office may be in the time frame of the first six weeks. So October 1, somewhere in that time frame, late September. It's been a labor of love, a lot of frustration through the process, but it's coming along and things are going well."
A new entrance loop on the rear of Wilson Elementary aims to improve safety by separating buses from cars. Because of renovations to the front side of the building, the parent drop-off zone won't open until next spring.
