UVA Men's Soccer Blanks Liberty 3-0 in Final Exhibition Match

Posted: Updated:

The UVA men's soccer team shutout Liberty 3-0 Saturday night at Klockner Stadium in its final exhibition match of 2012.

The Cavaliers open the regular season Friday night at 7:30 against Georgetown in the ACC/Big East Challenge in Germantown, Maryland.

Virginia finishes the preseason 2-0 after beating #15 Saint John's 1-0 Tuesday night.

On Saturday night, the 'Hoos took the early lead when freshman Zach Carroll scored off a corner kick in the tenth minute.

Less than three minutes into the second half, Brian James, who scored the only goal Tuesday night against the Red Storm, put home a penalty kick after the Flames brought down Cameron Chavira in the box.

In the 57th minute, freshman Darius Madison scored on an assist from sophomore Chris Somerville to make it 3-0.

UVA out-shot Liberty 20-5, putting eight shots on goal to two for the Flames.

"When you get two results in preseason like this, and I think deservedly so, in particular with possession that we played," said UVA head coach George Gelnovatch. "Gosh, I don't know how many passes we strung together in both games, so that part's good. It's hard to get scored on when you have the ball the whole time."

For the first time in 20 all-time regular season meetings, Liberty beat Virginia 2-0 in September.
