Teachers know kids who don't read during summer break are at a disadvantage when the class bell rings in the fall. That's why educators from Charlottesville and Albemarle have started a program to bridge the reading gap for students while school is out of session.
They've teamed up with the Boys and Girls Club for a summer reading program. Teachers work for about an hour a day reading to the kids most at risk of falling behind. The kids also get a chance to take trips and do activities that relate to what they've read.
Organizers hope to expand the program to all five Boys and Girls Clubs in the region and make it something that happens all year round.
