The seventh ranked Virginia women's soccer team, playing without head coach Steve Swanson and star forward Morgan Brian, lost its season opener to eighth ranked Penn State 3-1.
The Cavaliers tied the game at one in the 76th minute on a header from Makenzy Doniak, her first career goal, but Penn State regained the lead 22 second later with a breakaway goal by Mallory Weber. The Nittany Lions added another goal in the 88th minute.
It was just the second time in 13 years that Virginia has lost its season opener. The Cavaliers host Radford Sunday at 2pm.
