Firefighters in the Shenandoah Valley are "fired up" to help the Muscular Dystrophy Association. They are manning intersections in Staunton and Augusta County and filling boots with donations for the national nonprofit.
The money also helps benefit an annual camp for children with muscular dystrophy.
Staunton firefighters manned the busy intersection of Greenville Avenue and Richmond Road, and say most drivers are happy to share the road.
Captain Brian Butler of the Staunton Fire Department said, "99 percent of them are very grateful that we're standing out, willing to do it, standing out in the hot sun. If the light turns green, we try to get out of the way and let the traffic go, so it doesn't cause an issue but for the most part most folks are very supportive of it."
Staunton will continue fundraising on Friday afternoon, and hope to raise $6,000. Firefighters in Augusta are aiming for another $2,500 with collection sites in Verona, Stuarts Draft and Fishersville.
