Backpack Buddies Collect Supplies for the Boys and Girls Club
The Boys and Girls Club of Central Virginia has a lot more book bags for students thanks to a Charlottesville girl and her school supply drive.
Twelve-year-old Lucia Hoerr started Backpack Buddies two years ago. At the time her goal was to fill 58 backpacks with school supplies. This year, nearly 90 are filled and ready to go to those in need at the Boys and Girls Club.
Lucia has been working hard all summer to raise money and collect school supplies. She held a school supply donation drive and mailed flyers to gain support. She even sold cookies and lemonade to raise money. In all, she collected $1300 to buy supplies.
The rising seventh grade student has been getting a lot of support from the community and beyond. A company in Northern Virginia found her website and donated about 40 backpacks with supplies.
"I feel really good at the end of each year when we do it and just throughout the summer that I'm going to help out and change kids' school year," Lucia said.
Lucia even recruited some of her friends to help fill the backpacks including Gillian Borton.
"It's great because those kids don't have a lot, and the smile on their face, anything like that makes your day," Gillian said.
The book bags are filled with the basics including paper, pens, notebooks and folders. There are even flash drives, calculators and headphones making their way into backpacks.
