An Augusta County sergeant has won a prestigious award for his commitment to safety. Sergeant James "Monty" Sellers of the Augusta County Sheriff's Office is being honored as the 2011 Virginia Traffic Safety Officer of the Year.
As traffic safety coordinator, Sellers participates in Click It or Ticket and the Checkpoint Strikeforce. Sellers says deputies respond to a lot of calls and work overtime running radar.
"Everybody's complaint comes serious to us, and we want to act on it," Sellers said. "And try to get the injuries and the fatalities down. That's our goal is to get the traffic accidents down, and get people back to concentrating on their driving."
Sellers has been the county's traffic safety advocate for eight years, building a program that has reduced the number of fatal collisions in Augusta County.
