Former Cavalier TE Could Have Bigger Role with the Cowboys

Posted: Updated:

Dallas Cowboys Pro Bowl tight end Jason Witten suffered a serious spleen injury against Oakland Monday night and will miss the rest of the preseason...and maybe longer.

His backup is former UVA tight end John Phillips.

The Cowboys say they have a lot of confidence in Phillips, because he's played well when called upon.

Phillips played in all 16 games last year for Dallas, catching 15 passes for a 101 yards.

The Cowboys drafted Phillips in the sixth round in 2009, and he's been with the Cowboys for four years.
