UVA Men's Soccer Team Blanks #15 Red Storm in Exhibition

Posted: Updated:

The UVA men's soccer team beat #15 Saint John's 1-0 Tuesday night at Klockner Stadium in Virginia's first exhibition match of the 2012 season.

Lightning caused the match to be called in the 82nd minute.

Cavalier freshman Brian James scored the only goal of the match in the 48th minute.

"It was a good result, but we have a lot to work on," said UVA head coach George Gelnovatch. "We had a lot of new faces out there, but given that we've only been at it for six days, I was pleased. Just about everyone on the team got a run, and the starters got about a 60-minute run. We played a very good opponent, the defending Big East champions who had a lot of players returning. We scheduled them for a reason. Coach (Dave) Masur does a great job, and they are very fit and organized."

The 'Hoos outshot the Red Storm 11-8, putting three shots on goal to just one for St. John's.

The Red Storm couldn't capitalize on eight corner kicks. Virginia had five.

UVA plays its final exhibition match of the preseason Saturday night at 7:00 against Liberty at Klockner.

The Wahoos open the regular season August 24 against Georgetown at the Maryland SoccerPlex in Germantown, Maryland.
