UVA Men's Basketball Team Wins Final Game of European Tour

Posted: Updated:

The UVA men's basketball team beat AMW Team France, a team of French professionals, 82-65 in Paris Tuesday.

The Cavaliers finish their five-game European tour with a record of 2-3.

AMW Team France lost its first game this exhibition season after beating Virginia by four Monday and handing Kansas two losses.

UVA head coach Tony Bennett used two lineups throughout the game. Jontel Evans, Evan Nolte, Taylor Barnette, Justin Anderson, and Darion Atkins played the first five minutes of each period. Paul Jesperson, Teven Jones, Mike Tobey, Joe Harris, and Akil Mitchell played the final five minutes of each period.

"The France team was a little disinterested early, and then they made a rally in the third period, but our guys withstood the rally," said Bennett. "I played them in five-minute waves, hockey shifts, and I think that was good to see different guys get experiences."

Mitchell, a junior forward, led the Wahoos with 15 points and nine rebounds.

Harris scored 13 points, and freshman forward Anderson had eleven points in the win.

Nolte added nine points and four boards. Evans, the lone senior on the squad, had eight points and four assists.

Jesperson also scored eight points. Fellow sophomore Atkins had six points and seven rebounds.

Tobey, a freshman center, had six points and seven rebounds in the win.

UVA led 29-14 after one quarter, 49-38 at half, and 59-55 after three before pulling away with a 13-0 run midway through the fourth quarter.

"I think this was probably the most physical of all the games that we've played, and I thought our guys embraced that physicality more," said Bennett. "The officials, to be polite, were letting guys basically maul each other out there. You just had to play, and you had to be strong with the ball, and you knew when shots went up there was going to be a lot of contact. I think there's no other way to get the point across about how strong you have to be and how good a position you have to be in, except to be in a situation like that where if you're out of position, or you're not really braced or ready, you're going to get knocked on your can."

The team concludes its trip with a final day of sightseeing in Paris on Wednesday before flying back to Charlottesville on Thursday.
