David Passerell Wins His 3rd Jefferson Cup - NBC29 WVIR Charlottesville, VA News, Sports and Weather

For the third straight day, David Passerell shot under par to capture his third Boar's Head Jefferson Cup title at Birdwood Golf Course Sunday.

"It means a lot," said Passerell. "I haven't played much golf in the last couple years. I'm around it a lot with The First Tee and all that kind of stuff. I don't play as much competitive golf as I used to, but I can tell what happens as soon as I step on the first tee, I feel like I have been playing. I want to compete, and I want to win as bad as anyone out here. Fortunately this weekend, I hit it really good."

Passerell shot back-to-back 67s Friday and Saturday and fired a 1-under par 70 on Sunday to win by seven shots over first round leader Phil Mahone.

After an opening round 5-under par 66, Mahone shot even par Saturday and trailed by three strokes heading into the final round.

With a birdie on the par 4 7th, Mahone cut Passerell's lead to one shot.

On the par 4 10th hole, 120 yards out in a fairway bunker, Passerell also holed out for eagle and tapped in a five-foot putt for birdie to move to 9-under par for the tournament and two shots clear of Mahone heading to the back nine.

Another birdie on the par 4 11th, the toughest hole on the course, gave Passerell a four-shot lead after Mahone bogeyed the tenth hole.

Passerell coasted from there for the win.

"...Sometimes hard to believe," Passerell said. "Sometimes I don't feel that old to be able to win that. At 44, to win it again is very special. It'll probably provide some motivation to keep on playing."

UVA redshirt freshman Nick Tremps finished third at 2-over par.

Ty Grove and Jeff Dillman tied for fourth place in the 54-hole event.

Mahone did take home the 22nd annual Battle Trophy, given to central Virginia's best golfer in the summer.
