Students at the University of Virginia returning from summer break are causing a surge in business for truck rental companies, but at the same time, are leaving storage companies at a loss.
Charlottesville Self Storage loses about 50 percent of their storage spots when school gets back in session. Meanwhile, Penske Truck Rental in Charlottesville is gearing up for a "moving madhouse".
Jordan Stokes, with Penske said, "They are going to bring a lot of trucks into this lot and it's going to fill up like crazy."
Out-of-state students will be dropping their trucks off after their move, and students transporting furniture into their new homes will be picking up a vehicle.
On a typical Saturday, only a couple trucks are rented. With students rolling in over the next few weekends, they expect to rent around 20 next Saturday. After the rush ends, Penske plans to relocate the extra vehicles to other locations throughout the state.
