Defensive Backfield Full of Youth at UVA

Posted: Updated:

It's practice #6 of fall camp for the UVA football team Saturday.

After five days at The Park, Virginia's final open practice took place at Scott Stadium.

The Cavaliers hit the field for about two hours starting around 4:00.

It was the first chance for many freshmen to play at Scott Stadium.

The 'Hoos have a number of true or redshirt freshman competing for playing time, especially in the defensive backfield.

Sophomore cornerback Demetrious Nicholson started all 13 games last season but is the only defensive back with any significant experience.

Of the 14 'Hoos listed as cornerbacks and safeties on the 105-man fall camp roster, only one, junior Rijo Walker, is an upperclassman.

True freshman Maurice Canady from Varina High School in Richmond has seen a lot of time with the first-team defense this week, helping to lead the way in a talented first-year class.

"I've said this a lot of times with freshmen," said UVA head coach Mike London. "Some of the good thing is they don't know what they don't know. Right now, he thinks he can cover everything and anybody, which is a good thing. It's a good thing to have. He's learning how to play the position, the technical skills of it that's he'll be a better player. Right now, a good thing about a lot of these freshmen is they're coming in like, 'show me where to line up, and I want to go play. That's a good attribute to have with any incoming young man."

"They're looking great," said Nicholson. "They're coming along pretty fast. Everyday in meetings, they're asking me questions, and I've still got a lot of learning to do myself, but being that I have experience, and learning from Chase (Minnifield), I'm able to answer those questions for them and tell them the mistakes I've made, so they won't make the same ones."
