5th Congressional District Candidates Forum

Posted: Updated:

Congressman Robert Hurt was a no-show to square off against his democratic challenger at a 5th district candidates forum Wednesday.

John Douglass addressed a crowd at the Senior Center in Charlottesville Wednesday afternoon.  He took questions from the audience about why he decided to run and critical issues facing senior citizens.

"He's dodging the debate process.  He doesn't want to stand up in front of the American people and answer why does he wishy-washy on this uranium mine," Douglass said.

Hurt's campaign tells NBC29 that he was fulfilling meeting requests while traveling the district to listen to the concerns of small businesses.  Both sides hope to have a debate before the November election.

Robert Hurt for Congress
Statement

Robert takes his responsibility as representative for the people of the 5th District very seriously and takes every opportunity to make himself available to all of his constituents.  His primary duty is to the people of the 5th District and today, he was fulfilling meeting requests while traveling the district to listen to the concerns of small businesses and farmers on the economy, regulatory burdens, and rising energy costs as a result of failed, big government policies.  Robert looks forward to balancing the time required to perform his primary duty as the 5th District representative with the demands of this important election." - Sean Brown, Campaign Manager, Robert Hurt for Congress
