Frank Beamer and the Virginia Tech football team had its first practice of fall camp Tuesday afternoon in Blacksburg.
The Hokies are ranked 20th in the preseason coaches poll, but Tech still has some questions to be answered.
Virginia Tech must replace four starters on the offensive line from last year's 11-3 Sugar Bowl squad to protect redshirt junior quarterback Logan Thomas in his second season as the starting QB.
Freshman JC Coleman is one of a handful of guys fighting for the starting running back job along with former Harrisonburg High School star Michael Holmes.
Beamer says it will likely be a running back by committee approach this year.
"I thought the first day...I thought it really went well," said Beamer. "I thought our freshmen showed up out there, competed. I said all I along I thought it was a good freshman class, and what I saw here on the first day, I think it's a good freshman class. Evaluate this practice and get ready for practice number two."
The Virginia Tech grad is now 66 years old, entering his 26th season as head coach at his alma mater.
The active all-time winningest college football coach with 251 wins still wants to lead Tech.
"I'm going to coach as long as my health is good and I got a good quarterback," said Beamer. "I'm well aware of when's a right time to step down. Right now, I like our kids. I think we've got great kids in our program."
