Press Release from Virginia State Police

Virginia State Police Trooper D.C. Palmer was called to the scene of the single-vehicle crash at 10:32 p.m. on Route 602, less than a mile from Bingham Mountain Road.

A 2005 Dodge Caravan was traveling east on Route 602 when it ran off the left side of the road, struck a culvert, and then struck a wooden fence. The impact of the crash forced one of the fence pickets to go through the windshield of the van and strike the driver, a 17-year-old male from Stanardsville. The teenager was flown to UVA Hospitals for treatment of life-threatening injuries.

The crash remains under investigation at this time, with charges pending. At the time of the crash the road was dry, but there was heavy fog in the area. Alcohol was not a factor in the crash.
