Linebackers Ready To Lead UVA

Posted: Updated:

The Virginia football team will kick off the start of a brand new season Monday, as the Cavaliers hold their first practice of the 2012 season.

The 'Hoos will be practicing at The Park intramural complex this year, as work continues on the new indoor facility at the McCue Center.

The first six practices will be open to the public, and begin at four o'clock on Monday.

The linebacking crew is expected to be a strength of the team this year for the Cavaliers, and senior captains Steve Greer and LaRoy Reynolds will be counted on to anchor the defense.

Reynolds says, "As a unit, I think we just continuously want to get better.  We want to prove we're the best, or one of the best in the ACC, and hopefully one of the best in the country."

Greer says the linebackers have a lot of responsibilities.

"All the linebackers have to make all the calls, and the formations," says Greer.  "Make sure the D-Line is set up right, and they know where they're going.  The defensive backs have to communicate with the linebackers, to make sure we have the right calls, and we're playing the right coverage.  There's a multitude of calls that go on.  You just have to be vocal, and think fast."

Reynolds has made 24-starts over the past two seasons, and had 81 tackles last year, including seven tackles for a loss.

Greer led Virginia with 103 tackles.

He has played in every regular season game of his college career, only missing the Bowl Game last year with a knee injury.

"We understand that we're not going to be able to ease into the season," says Greer.  "We're going to have to be on our game and stay focused each week.  We are taking the mentality of one week at a time, so right now we're 100% focused on Richmond, but we do understand we have to be on top of our game, and really stay focused."

Reynolds says, "Me and Greer, we've talked about it numerous times, probably too much, just about the job we have to do this season, being leaders, and developing the guys around us, and building that strong brotherhood, so we can get after guys, and get after it during camp, and get after it during the season."

The Cavaliers open the season September 1st at home against Richmond.
