Posted: Updated:

More than 30 teenagers kept Albemarle County police at bay for almost four hours overnight as they tried to break up an underage party.

Police responded to a house on Turnberry Circle just before 11:00 Saturday night.  Those inside the house refused to open the door for police.

Albemarle County police had to get a search warrant, but before they could execute it, some parents talked the teens into opening the door just before 3:00 Sunday morning.

Police say 34 people were in the house along with numerous containers of alcohol.  Seven people were charged with underage possession of alcohol.

Press Release

On Saturday August 4, 2012 at approximately 10:44 PM, officers with the Albemarle County Police Department were dispatched to 3309 Turnberry Circle for a report of a large party with possible underage persons.

Officers arrived on scene and immediately encountered several individuals running from the residence.  Officers were able to apprehend some of these individuals who were subsequently charged with Underage Possession of Alcohol.  The individuals also informed the officers that there were at least 15 more juveniles and young adults inside the residence.

Officers attempted to make contact with the occupants but they refused to open the door for them.  Several parents began to show up at the residence but refused to cooperate with the officers.  Officers were forced to obtain a search warrant for the residence in order to gain entry to ensure the safety of the individuals inside.  A unit with the Charlottesville Albemarle Rescue Squad was also dispatched to provide EMS support at the request of the police department due to the potential of alcohol poisoning.

At approximately 2:53 AM on Sunday August 5, 2012, officers were preparing to execute the search warrant at the residence when several of the parents began to contact their children via cell phones, text messages, and yelling from the street.  They were able to persuade the occupants to open the door and allow the police to enter the residence.  Officers located 34 individuals between the ages of 15 and 19 years of age; as well as numerous containers of alcohol throughout the home.

EMS personnel evaluated several of the individuals but none were found to be suffering from Alcohol Poisoning.  All of the individuals were identified and released to a parent or responsible adult.  The home owner was unaware of the party until she returned home.

Seven people were charged with Underage Possession of Alcohol and have pending court dates.
