Parents and neighbors in southern Albemarle County are getting more information about a plan to possibly shut down Yancey Elementary School in Esmont.
County supervisors Duane Snow and Chris Dumler answered questions inside a packed Yancey cafeteria Wednesday night. A report from the school system's Long Range Planning Advisory Committee recommends closing Yancey and moving the students to Scottsville Elementary in order to cut costs.
"This school is the lighthouse of this community. It is the glue that keeps this community together," former Yancey student and teacher Waltine Eubanks said.
Supervisors Snow and Dumler, along with Albemarle County School Board Member Eric Strucko urged people to come out to the next school board meeting. That is scheduled for Thursday, August 9 at 6:30 p.m. inside the Albemarle County Office Building on McIntire Road.
