It is still in the construction phases, but Champion Brewing Company hopes to start making beer within a couple of months, and open its doors around Thanksgiving. The brewery will be located on 6th Street SE near the Belmont Bridge.
A new law that went into effect this year means the brewery will not have to operate as a full-scale restaurant to sell beer on site. Instead, it hopes to rely on the help of area food trucks.
Champion Brewing Company owner Hunter Smith stated, "So instead of taking the time to learn and all this stuff something I'm not interested in doing, you know, give the support to people who are already there doing their thing and give them an additional place to come sell food and make money."
Champion will start brewing on a small scale in September, in time for an appearance at this year's Top of the Hops Beer Festival in Charlottesville.
