Construction will begin later this year on the Route 29 Western Bypass, but a Charlottesville nonprofit isn't waiting around. Charlottesville Tomorrow, a community news organization, is building a virtual version of the project, and needs your help to do it.
The goal is to take the 323 pages of lengthy construction plans, and turn them into a visually detailed three dimensional rendering of the future road. Last year, the nonprofit did the same thing with the Virginia Department of Transportation's 1997 bypass plans. Now it's back again to tackle the new plans.
So far, Charlottesville Tomorrow has raised more than a third of its $7,000 goal.
"The point of the Kickstarter campaign is to get the best tools in peoples' hands as possible, so that when they get the opportunity to go in front of our elected officials and share their opinions on this road, they know what they're talking about because they've seen it," Charlottesville Tomorrow's Jennifer Marley said.
The 3-D bypass rendering should take less than a month to complete once the funds are raised. The month-long campaign ends August 10.
