Hundreds of people in southern Albemarle County who've been dealing with slow pace Internet will soon be able to plug in at a higher speed.
CenturyLink is putting down 21 miles of fiber that will bring 500 homes high-speed Internet off Route 20 south. The company says it received funds for the project from private investors, but will not release the names of those investors or the final price tag at this time.
Simone Alley of CenturyLink said, "It's a big price tag for us but it's money that we're willing to invest and we've got some private funding."
This is on top of a $2.1 million federal grant from the Connect America Fund that aims to bring 2,700 homes in rural Virginia high-speed Internet. By the end of this year, CenturyLink says 90 percent of Albemarle County will have high-speed Internet coverage.
