If you live in an urban area of Albemarle County, there is a chance you could soon let chickens and goats roam your backyard.
The Albemarle County Planning Commission is updating its comprehensive plan and considering allowing more agricultural uses in urban locations. Cal Morris, the chair of the commission, believes it should be dependent on how the people living in these areas feel.
"Livestock in the form of chickens and goats and whatever, it might be in a highly developed area, is problematic to me. It seems to me that each one of those developments, if they do not have covenants, they ought to have a say whether they're going to do it or not," he stated.
If the commission goes forward with this plan, some members recommend using the city of Charlottesville's urban agriculture rules as a model for Albemarle County.
The planning commission hopes to be finished with the update within the year. After that the proposal will go before the Albemarle County Board of Supervisors.
