Players for the Washington Redskins reporting for training camp Wednesday, with the first day of practice set for Thursday.
There is a lot of excitement surrounding Redskins Training Camp this year because of one guy.
Rookie quarterback Robert Griffin III has already been named the Redskins starter, and he will shoulder a lot of the load in an effort to lead the Redskins to the playoffs this season.
The rookie from Baylor was so impressive at rookie minicamp in May that head coach, Mike Shanahan proclaimed Griffin the Redskins starter when camp ended.
RG3 worked out with the team's veterans in June.
The Redskins are only going to allow limited media access to Griffin during training camp, making him available just once a week, and the first chance to talk to RG3 was Wednesday.
"The team doesn't look at me that way, they don't look at me as a celebrity," says Griffin. "Yeah, I'm the quarterback, and the guy that's going to lead them , and lead them to victory, but there's no celebrity.
"There's no autographs in the locker room, for the most part," Griffin said with a laugh. "I'm not 'RG3' to them, I'm just 'Robert.' That's good, to be around those guys for the next couple of weeks, and then into the preseason. It's going to be really good to just bear down, and focus on football."
The Redskins hope Griffin is a permanent fix at quarterback, at least for the next decade.
Since 1989, the Redskins have had 24 different starting quarterbacks.
That's 24 signal callers in the last 24 years.
Griffin says, "The fans are definitely starved for success, but I think the players in that locker room are starved for success as well. They want to get out and show people what they're made of. Whether we're ranked first in the poll, or fourth in our division, whatever it is, I don't think anyone in that locker room really cares. We know what we have to do to go out and be successful."
In the last month RG3 has signed a 21-million dollar contract with the Redskins and starred in several commercials.
"I've tried to stay grounded the whole time," says Griffin. "We live in a right now world. It's mostly what have you done for me lately, and right now, the only thing I've been good for for the Redskins is fan popularity, and the fan base being really excited to come out and support us through this season. I just try to remain focused, and continue to work, and act like I'm that undrafted free agent who's trying to make the team, and just go out and perform that way."
