Packing for Success

Posted: Updated:

A Fluvanna County teenager is on a mission to make sure all of her fellow classmates will start the school year off right.

Bree Key was in middle school when she started Packed for Success in 2010.  Her intent was to collect book bags and school supplies for students in Fluvanna County Public Schools who couldn't afford them.

"I started this the year I was going into the 7th grade and I just noticed a lot of my classmates and a lot of other people didn't have school supplies that they needed so I thought I could help try to collect school supplies," Key said.

In that first year Key collected about 40 backpacks.  Last year more than 400 were donated to her cause.

Key's Packed for Success program is continuing this year, and is accepting supplies from now until August 6th. Materials can be delivered to drop-off sites at all Fluvanna County Public Schools, several business in Fluvanna County, and even some businesses in Charlottesville.

She is also holding her second annual "Fill the Bus" drive at Walmart at Zion Crossroads Friday, July 27th through July 29th from 9 A.M. to 6 P.M.

The now rising ninth grader is not stopping there though. She is also co-sponsoring the first annual "Back to School" fundraiser on Sunday, August 5th at Pleasant  Grove from 2 P.M. to 6 P.M.

The public can expect games and a community picnic at the event, which is coinciding with Fluvanna County's high school grand opening. Admission is five dollars per vehicle or you can donate school supplies.
