The Albemarle Board of Supervisors is teaming up with cellphone providers to improve service by updating an ordinance.
The personal wireless facility policy was written in 2001 and sets regulations on how cellphone towers get approved. Regulations include things like how tall towers can be above the tree line.
With how much technology has changed and the need for better cell service, supervisors say updating the policy will be a balancing act.
"The need for these towers with visual impact obviously - the beautiful scenery in Albemarle County is really important, makes a lot of people move here," Albemarle County Supervisor Chris Dumler said. "At the same time, over the last 10 years, cellphone have become much more important."
Supervisors are working with representatives from Verizon, AT&T, nTelos and Sprint. They hope to write the updated policy in September.
