The Virginia Insurance Counseling and Assistance Program (VICAP) is teaming up with the Jefferson Area Board for Aging (JABA) to help those bringing in a low-income pay for Medicare benefits.
VICAP is holding an open house on July 30 to help. Qualified people receive assistance with prescription drugs, Medicare premiums, and health care costs.
VICAP says too often people aren't aware extra help is available.
"We know that there are probably a significant number of people who live in rural areas and may not even read the newspaper or get a lot of information and they're just unaware of what might be available out there for them," VICAP insurance specialist Phyllis Payne said.
The open house will take place at the JABA office on Hillsdale Drive in Albemarle County. People should bring a Medicare card, photo ID, and proof of income.
