The University of Virginia Health System has come up with an innovative way to get bone cancer patients treatment much faster and easier.
A new computer database will help track patients for early detection of problems. In addition, advanced radiation treatments will turn a process that usually take weeks to treat cancer into a one-day process, and ultimately a process that can take just 30 minutes.
UVA physician Paul Read "The obvious benefit to the patient is incredible convenience. As opposed to coming in multiple times, sitting in waiting rooms, having an on-and-off of treatments on multiple times. We hope to make this process in a convenient timeframe."
A $2.5 million grant from the federal government helped fund the innovations. Dr. Read says the advanced radiation techniques may minimize side effects.
