The Route 29 Western Bypass around Charlottesville is almost a done deal but one group says changes are still needed. There are some alternatives on the table in a new video campaign.
The Southern Environmental Law Center (SELC) has produced a short video highlighting some alternatives that they say is cheaper and more efficient than the new Route 29 bypass.
The SELC compiled 10 years of suggestions from the community into a 3-minute video. It highlights what they feel are viable and cheaper alternatives to the 6-mile, $244 million Western Bypass.
Among the suggestions are adding lanes to Route 29 at the Route 250 interchange, building an overpass to Hydraulic that goes over Route 29 and extending Berkmar and Hillsdale drives.
The SELC says these suggestions should cost around $180 million and protect the environment.
Back in June, the state awarded the construction contract to Skanska-Branch / JMT of Virginia Beach to build the bypass.
