Mike London Reacts to Phillip Sims' Transfer Waiver

Posted: Updated:

The quarterback position on the football team at the University of Virginia got a little more crowded Wednesday as the NCAA granted Phillip Sims has been granted a waiver to be able to play immediately for the Cavaliers.

Sims transferred from Alabama to UVA in April and has been enrolled in school since June.

The sophomore made the move due to family circumstances. The NCAA waiver means the top-ranked quarterback in the country from the Class of 2010 will be able to take the field in the fall for the 'Hoos.

"The news for him being able to play is great news for us," said UVA head coach Mike London. "The good thing is that he's been in summer school. He's gotten pretty good grades in summer school. Now, we have to evaluate him athletically in terms of learning our system, learning our plays and the terminology."

Sims will have three years of eligibility remaining at Virginia.

Junior Michael Rocco and sophomore David Watford split time at QB for the Cavaliers last year.

Sims (6-2, 211) appeared in eight games as a redshirt freshman for Alabama in 2011, completing 64 percent of his passes for 163 yards.

He graduated from Oscar Smith High School as the Commonwealth of Virginia's career leader in passing yards (10,725) and touchdown passes (119).
