The legal battle between the University of Virginia and General Electric is now over. A fight over electronic medical records, which has lasted for 13 years, has been settled out of court.
NBC29 has confirmed that a settlement has been reached between UVA and GE. We're waiting for the final papers to be signed.
Lawyers representing both sides say the terms of the agreement will be kept confidential.
In 1999, UVA filed a $30 million lawsuit against technology firm IDX claiming a breach of contract. IDX is now owned by GE.
IDX was supposed to develop an electronic medical record system for the UVA Medical Center, but UVA claimed that IDX did not reach certain milestones on the project.
GE claimed UVA breached
the contract first. GE countersued for $1.6 million as well as unspecified compensation for lost profits and expenditures.
A three-week long jury trial was supposed to start Wednesday. Once the final paperwork is completed, UVA will ask the judge to dismiss the case.
