Posted: Updated:

He's played for his home country of India in the Davis Cup, The Asian Games, and The Commonwealth Games.

In less than a month, former UVA tennis star Somdev Devvarman will play on the biggest stage in the most storied venue in all of tennis.

Devvarman continues his training and rehab in Charlottesville leading up to his trip to London for the Olympics in a couple weeks.

Devvarman earned a wild-card entry into the Olympics last week, and is one of 64 players selected for the tournament on the grass at Wimbledon.

The two-time NCAA champion at Virginia had shoulder surgery and has been sidelined since November, but says he can't wait to be the first Cavalier tennis player to participate in the Olympics.

"I remember as a kid watching the opening ceremonies," says Devvarman, "people standing up and getting medals for their country. Just playing the Olympics, representing your country, this is a huge honor. It literally is a dream come true.

Devvarman has been on the pro tour for four years.

"I've had quite a lot of experience playing for my country," says Devvarman, "playing big matches against pretty much everyone that's going to be in the Olympics for tennis, so it's going to be fun to be out there again and compete with everyone for gold.
