UVA Women's Soccer Hosting Skills Camp

Posted: Updated:

The Virginia women's soccer team is holding its annual Advanced Centers soccer camp this weekend on Grounds.

There are about 200 campers from all over the nation divided between this session and the one next week at Episcopal High School.

Cavaliers head coach Steve Swanson says a majority of the current players on the UVA roster made it to the Wahoo camp during their high school days, and the camp is a great way to showcase the school and the program

"Recruiting is happening earlier and earlier," says Swanson, "and this is one way we can not only work with them, but they can see the university, and see some of the offerings we have here.  It's been very worthwhile for us."

The four day camp is for girl soccer players 8th through 12th grade, and teaches both tactical and technical skills.

Swanson says the most important lessons are usually teaching the players about what it takes to play soccer at the college level.

"The whole recruiting aspect, and the timing of it, and the rules surrounding it are critical," says Swanson, "that these players, even as young as 9th grade, understand it, can appreciate it, and are starting the process."
