The 24th annual Charlottesville City Golf Championship will tee off at Meadowcreek Friday, as some of the best golfers in the region take the course for the three day event.
Cory Amory won the title by two-strokes last year, firing a 6-under-par 64 on the final day, but will not be competing this weekend.
Meadowcreek Golf PGA Pro Dan Knop says the field will be tough.
"We do have a lot of former champions in the field," says Knop. "All kinds of names. Great local players, great state players, and great nationals players as well. We have a lot of former champions, and a lot of younger players. We have a good vibe going for this tournament. We're looking forward to it, it's going to be great."
The City Championship has been running since 1988, and returns to a three-day format this year, after playing just two rounds in the past.
The senior championship will be held simultaneously, but will be just two rounds.
Past champions like Phil Mahone and Ty Grove will be among the field, and Knop says the course will be challenging.
"The course is good, it's going to be playing firm," says Knop. "Hopefully that will help people out with their approaches, and hitting the long drives. The course is in great shape. We've done a lot of great things this spring and the early part of the summer to get things right."
The first groups tee off Friday at 8 am.
