Annual Firecracker 5K in Staunton's Gypsy Hill Park
That rumbling in the city of Staunton Wednesday morning was not early fireworks. It was the sound of more than 200 runners, pounding the pavement for the Firecracker 5K.
The annual race in Gypsy Hill Park is organized by Blue Ridge Road Runners. One couple drove from Fredericksburg to join the race in their hometown. They told us how they keep up their strength in the oppressive heat.
"I run all year long," said 5K participant Jeff Kent. "In the wintertime you can go a little farther without having the need to drink the water and eat the food. But in summertime you've just got to double up."
5K participant Nicole Kent said, "I'm just going to sort of hang in there and try to have a good time, and just enjoy being home to Staunton."
As you might guess, the finish line at Staunton's Firecracker 5K offered a stockpile of bottled water.
