Former UVA star Mike Scott worked out for 15 teams leading up to Thursday night's NBA Draft.
The last team to bring the 6'8", 240-pound forward in for a pre-draft workout, the Atlanta Hawks, selected Scott with the 43rd pick in the second round.
The Chesapeake native will leave for Atlanta Tuesday to begin his pro career.
Scott will play for the Hawks in the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas, which has a record 24 teams participating this summer.
Atlanta's first game is a week from Friday.
The Hawks finished second in the Southeast Division of the Eastern Conference this past season, falling to the Boston Celtics in the first round of the playoffs as the #5 seed.
Scott said, "You got Al Horford, Josh Smith, stuff like that. I'm just happy to be a part of the crew, and hopefully I can contribute, especially Josh Smith. You know how explosive he is. I need to get some of that explosiveness in myself, so I'll be happy."
The second oldest player drafted Thursday night says he needs to work on guarding smaller players, his ball-handling, and shooting range.
Scott feels most comfortable playing the same position he did at Virginia, the one general manager Danny Ferry and the Hawks want him to play in Atlanta.
"I feel comfortable at the power forward position, just doing a lot of small forward stuff," said Scott. "If I have a mismatch on me, being able to put the ball on the ground, have someone smaller than me, go into the post. I'm a mismatch problem for some defenders. I just went out with a bang, just tried to go hard, and they liked it."
Scott might not get to play with Atlanta all-star Joe Johnson and forward Marvin Williams. The Hawks and Brooklyn Nets have agreed to a trade that would send Johnson from Atlanta to Brooklyn in exchange for guards Anthony Morrow, Jordan Farmar, and DeShawn Stevenson and forwards Jordan Williams and Johan Petro.
The Hawks have also agreed to trade forward Marvin Williams to the Utah Jazz for point guard Devin Harris.
