Storm Recovery Slow Going for People in Ivy

Posted: Updated:

Thousands of people are still in the dark in western Albemarle County.  The county's fire chief says Crozet and Ivy were hardest hit.

That means no lights, no air conditioning, and for John Fuller of Peacock Hill, it means charging the iPhone in the car.  "In my case, I have lots of batteries in my Prius, so it's helping me out a whole bunch," he said.

It's been lights out at Fuller's house since Friday's severe storms.

"It's difficult because certainly hotels fill up very quickly, and I have small children and I have a number of dogs and animals," Fuller said, "so we need to get them into a condition that's safe for them."

Fuller has plenty of company.  The O'Neals, and their dogs, are suffering too.  It's been more than four days without air conditioning, and they're worried the water is next.

"Here in Peacock Hill, we have a couple of tanks, but they're going to run dry probably in the next day or so," Carolyn O'Neal said.

Walking down Morgantown Road, you can see trees hugging power lines, and other electrical wires strewn alongside the road.

Albemarle County Fire Chief Dan Eggleston says Ivy and neighboring Crozet were hardest hit in the county, and it could be a while before all the roads are cleared of debris and the lights are back on.

"We certainly have crews working in those areas so we just ask for patience while crews continue to clean that up," Eggleston said.

Utility crews could be seen repairing some lines in the area Monday night, but just down the road from that small progress, more power lines sat tangled in trees.

"We're moving into day four, so at this juncture, you'd like to think there's hope, but I would expect it would be a few more days," Fuller said.

Dominion Virginia Power estimates electricity will be back for their customers by Saturday.
