Charlottesville Residents Try to Beat the Heat

Posted: Updated:

Trying to beat the heat is proving a challenge already.

It's a state-of-the-art piece of machinery, but even Pegasus has to beat the heat.  With temperatures at the 100 degree mark, the flight crew worked overtime on Friday to keep the helicopter cool.

Flight nurse Elizabeth Scott said, "We can cool the inside of the helicopter but not the outside.  So if it's outside and it's over 100 degrees, those are at risk."

The chopper has been moved into a hanger to keep the blistering sun from beating on the outer shell, and a machine pumps chilled air into the cabin to keep all the equipment properly functioning.

"So it's quicker for the air conditioner in the helicopter to cool the helicopter," Scott explained.

On Friday, just about everyone was trying to find some summer relief.  At Onesty pool, the line to get in wrapped around the complex.

Kelly Curry, who was trying to beat the heat, said, "We're just trying to get in the water and just trying to stay cool all day long."

Seven-year-old Evan O'Connell was one of more than 200 people packed into the pool.  He said, "It's like basically a carnival that's filled with water."

The heat is also bad for outdoor business.  Those trying to grab a bite to eat on the downtown mall kept inside.

Forecasters say the heat won't let up.  NBC29 meteorologist Clayton Stiver said, "It's still going to be in the 90s and we're still going to have that humidity out there so it's still going to be uncomfortable for many days."
