Charlottesville Social Services is accepting applications to make sure low-income families have the chance to keep cool.
If you have a vulnerable person in your home, such as a child under the age of six, or you care for someone who is disabled, you can get help.
If you are living alone, your maximum gross monthly income before taxes must be $1,211, or $2,498 dollars for a family of four.
Nancy Jackson with Charlottesville Social Services said, "The increased cost of electric bills in the summer time adds extra pressure on the families."
Cooling assistance covers things like electric bills to run central air and it helps purchase or repair one AC unit per household.
Like Charlottesville, 120 departments of social services across the commonwealth will be accepting applications from June 15 through August 15.
