Students Recreate Road Trip with 'Big Green Bus'

Posted: Updated:

A group of college students has recreated the summer road trip by making it a mission.  The "Big Green Bus" stopped in downtown Staunton Wednesday on a 12,000-mile journey around the nation.

The converted Greyhound bus is powered by used vegetable oil.  Solar panels on the roof power lights, electronic gear and a small fridge.

Students from Dartmouth College use the bus as a model of sustainability.  "There's kind of this shared spark of enthusiasm and encouragement," said Kelly McGlinchey from Dartmouth College.  So you know, as 11 young college students, we're still pretty enthusiastic and excited about what we're doing.  And it's great to kind of share that with other people."

Students on the Big Green Bus do service projects at each stop.   In Staunton's case, that was helping cultivate a community garden.

The trip around the nation is taking 11 weeks.
