A member of the Louisa County Board of Supervisors is explaining why the board voted to terminate a portion of its Mutual Aid Agreement with Fluvanna County.
Fitzgerald Barnes says the June 4 vote boils down to doing what's best for the people of Louisa.
"The concern is that the expectation of Louisa County taxpayers is that when they dial 911 they want to make sure that the services they paid for are rendered", said Barnes.
Barnes says the board received information showing that in several instances where ambulances were needed in Louisa County, they were on calls in Fluvanna County.
The board also obtained information showing that Louisa County was responding to more calls across the county line than Fluvanna was.
Lake Monticello Rescue Assistant Chief John Lye doesn't dispute the report, but says such findings are cyclical.
"Several years ago we helped them more than they helped us. That goes back a ways. Most of the supervisors weren't on the board at the time, so they probably don't remember that," said Lye.
Lye and others have taken their concerns to Fluvanna County Administrator Steven Nichols.
On Monday, they met with Nichols, who plans to meet with Louisa County administrators in the coming days.
Barnes says he hopes a compromise can be reached, but maintains the board's priority is making sure the people of Louisa County get the services they are expecting.
The board's vote only seeks termination of the emergency response portion of the agreement and not fire assistance.
