A coalition of community groups in Staunton are coming together to prevent elder abuse. The Staunton Senior Center hosted Friday's daylong conference called "Learn More, Do More."
Representatives from churches, civic groups and nursing homes gathered to share information and hear a presentation on the numerous types of abuse. Organizers say the event is all about raising awareness and action.
"A lot of what's increasing is the financial exploitation," said Lynn Harris with the Staunton Senior Center. "And there's so many different ways that that can happen. However, there is still going on a lot of neglect, a lot of physical abuse, a lot of emotional abuse."
Just this past spring, a Staunton woman was convicted of physically and financially abusing an elderly man. She's still awaiting sentencing.
